That wonderful
feeling of being pregnant, of contemplating life within - that perhaps naive
but certainly comprehensible feeling that I was unique, that this was so
special... My first-born Ilya is now 28 years old, and this, one of my earliest
sculptures, still holds a unique feeling for me. It has a primitive feel I
really like and is stylized rather than realistic... a break from my often more
traditional style. One of my friends and clients, Manuela Ostertag, bought one of a limited bronze edition of 50 because she's planning on getting pregnant and wants it to inspire her. Originally I called it "The Woman with the removable stomach" since you can take the bronze baby/egg out and hold it in your hand (hey! I was creating "interactive" sculpture before it became fashionable...).
