Sculpture Commemorative Statue Lifesize Sculpture of "Tony Sox Byrne" Olympic Boxing Champion - Ireland |
A commission
of a lifesize sculpture for Drogheda, Ireland I worked on this commissioned sculpture with the help of sculptor friends Zhang Yaxi and Shen Xiaonan in China, during May 2006, then had it cast in bronze and shipped by container to Dublin port. I am available for any collector intent on commissioning a sculpture or statuary for either indoor or outdoor locations. Above: Working with friends of this commemorative sculpture - the lifesize bronze commissioned whole figure of O1956 Olympic bronze medallist, boxer Tony "Socks" Byrne Face and boxing glove detail of the lifesize figure in clay Another close up shot of the whole figure in clay Focusing on the shorts - Tony was sent pictures of the sculpture as it progressed and wanted them made shorter! ![]() One of several photos used to create the likeness - a hard task but workable given the help of Tony's daughter Lisa and of Tony himself. I sent them pictures of the progressing sculpture every few days for comments and alterations. I took photos and measurements of Tony as he is now, but of course had to adapt for the commission to represent the much younger boxer Tony was when he won the Olympic medal This sculpture was inaugurated in the presence of city officials and Tony Byrne himself in december 2006, and is now permanently located on the north bank of the Boyne river, close to a footbridge. A monumental sculptor has many challenges when recreating a subject's likeness... Tony "Socks" Byrne and his family were pleased with the result, and so were the Committee who commissioned the sculpture. See pictures here of the bronze sculpture being unveiled in Drogheda. |
