President Mitterrand
inaugurating in February 1985 the bust of Jean Jaurès
which I was commissioned to create by the (then) Deputé de
l'Oise, Mr. Guy Vadepied.
Arriving at
the reception after the inauguration - Laury Dizengremel (right) towing
behind President Mitterrand (center)...
"I listened as Mr. Vadepied
explained to the President who I was.... Then the President turned,
grabbed my hand for the respectful and very French baise-main and
asked in his deep voice 'So it is to you, Madame, we owe this
beautiful bust of Jaures?' to which I replied in the affirmative
and that was that! Afterwards, lunch, lots of wine for all of us and
for me also a memorable and lively conversation with Charles Hernu
(then Minister of Defence). I look back at this image of my young face
and marvel at the opportunities in which commissioned artists
interact with people of power, and the unique chance I was given way
back then."
